The Johannesburg Emergency Services has called on people living in informal settlements and low lying areas to continue to monitor water levels when it rains, and move to higher ground should there be a need.
On Monday night, Johannesburg Emergency Services had to evacuate two families of the Stjwetla informal settlement in Alexandra due to heavy rain.
This after a portion of a bridge on the Jukskei River collapsed, and led to flooding.
The bridge has been undergoing repair work.
EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi says, “Last night we evacuated 11 residents from the two houses which were flooded along the Jukskei River. There were no injuries that were reported during the incident. At this stage we have already conducted inspection in the area and the water levels are much lower. There’s no immediate danger.”

Meanwhile, earlier on Monday, Emergency Services officials urged motorists to avoid flooded areas during the festive season after heavy rains in parts of the country, including Gauteng, Limpopo, and the Eastern Cape.
Emergency services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi says motorists must continue to exercise caution on the roads.
