Emergency Services officers are urging parents and guardians to monitor their children, especially people living close to rivers and streams.

Heavy rain across the country has resulted in a significant rise in water levels.

Children often get tempted to play or swim near rivers and streams, increasing their risk of drowning.

Johannesburg Emergency Services spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi says they have seen an increase in the number of drownings in Johannesburg.

“Most of our informal settlements are within the river streams. Areas like Stjwetla in Alexandra, alongside Jukskei river, Klipvalley river stream in Kliptown and also Kaalfontein in the area of Ivory Park and Midrand area. So young kids are most tempted to go and play in those areas and in the process drown in those areas,” explains Mulaudzi.
