South Africans share differing views on BRICS Summit

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Cape Town residents have mixed reactions to South Africa’s hosting of the 15th Summit of BRICS nations.

It is the first BRICS Summit to be hosted in person since the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown restrictions.

These are the views of some residents.

“I think we should do our own thing, you know sometimes staying away from these giants of the world, sometimes it’s a good thing. You know we should try to look after our own.”

“I think we should stay in the middle and not get involved in other people’s fights.”

“Worry about other things around the world, they can’t even sort out their own problems around here, what about the load shedding?”

Meanwhile, in Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, residents are excited about the upcoming BRICS Summit, that will be hosted in Johannesburg come Tuesday.

A few items that are expected to be discussed in length, is the expansion of BRICS, the BRICS Bank and economic cooperation.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to address the nation on Sunday night regarding the upcoming BRICS Summit as well as South Africa’s foreign policy.

Residents of the Nelson Mandela Bay believe this summit is a step in the right direction for the country.

“I think that it is very important that we came together as leaders of nations, and we see the problems that we face and how other nations combat such things and what their solutions are so that we can come together and find solutions and we can have different perspectives in our diversities of cultures.”

“For us to have a relationship in all spheres with the people from the left, especially those who are progressive like those in BRICS. So, I find SA is on the right path.”

“I am happy because at least those are people who are coming with different ideas regarding the economy, which will assist us because most of our people aren’t working. So, we hope when they come here it will lead to investments and people will get work.”
