SA tourism sector anticipates a negative impact on business if October school holidays are scrapped

As the Department of Basic Education plans to scrap the October school holidays to try and catch up with the time lost as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the tourism sector says it’s going to be hard hit by this move.

Parents usually take their children to various holiday destinations during school recess.

Kruger National Park Spokesperson, Ike Phaahla says in the absence of a large number of international tourists due to travel bans, the move by Basic Education Department will have a very negative impact on their business.

“School holidays are also part of our peak season in the Kruger National Park. So with the school holidays being cancelled it will have an impact on our tourism income. As parents always want to take their kids out. For camping and also to enjoy the natural heritage that we have in the country,” says  Phaahla.
