The South African Police Service (SAPS) has deployed police officers at the National Results Operation Centre (ROC) to ensure safety and security.

Lieutenant Colonel, Jaan Staynberg, says they will ensure that everyone who accesses the centre is accredited.

“Police are deployed to look at issues around access control, crowd management and pick up on any means or threat around the centre,” explains Staynberg.

Meanwhile, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says it expects employee disputes to be resolved by the end of Monday. Workers have threatened to strike on Election Day if the IEC fails to respond to wage negotiations.

IEC’s Chief Electoral Officer, Sy Mamabolo says they are currently liaising with unions to forge a way forward.

“We received communication from the labour unions on Friday and we engaged yesterday (Sunday), and we’ve been consulting with the commission overnight. There is a proposal on the table. We should be able to find one another before the end of the day today (Monday) and we believe there will be reasonable accommodation on both sides.”
