SA Weather Service issues warning of severe thunderstorms in KZN

The South African Weather Service has issued an alert warning of severe thunderstorms and strong winds bringing with it hail and excessive lightning over the western and southern parts of KwaZulu-Natal today.

Forecaster Thandiwe Gumede says a 60% chance of scattered showers and thundershowers across the province will also be expected later this afternoon.

“For today we expect scattered showers and thundershowers for most of the province that is a 60%, we do have an alert out for severe thunderstorms mostly over western parts as well as southern parts of the province.

Those storms are expected to be accompanied by strong winds that might result in some damage to some parts of the province. They expected to be accompanied by hail, excessive lightning which might cause danger to life both human and livestock and also a possibility of some heavy downpours in some places.”

Gumede gives details of places in and around KwaZulu-Natal that will be affected by today’s weather warning alert.

“The Western parts will include areas like Newcastle, Dundee coming down towards Ladysmith, Bergville, Winterton, Mooi River, Estcourt, Underberg side, including Pietermaritzburg, Richmond, and coming down south along the coast including Port Shepstone, Scottburgh and some parts of Durban for today.”
