Transport Minister Blade Nzimande says there are still a lot of challenges in dealing with road safety on South African roads.
Nzimande is part of a joint-multi-disciplinary Easter weekend road safety awareness campaign under way on the N1 between Pretoria and Hammanskraal.
Several vehicles have been stopped and some motorists issued with fines for offences ranging from unroadworthy vehicles and failing to produce driver licenses.
Immigration officials have arrested 10 undocumented foreign nationals mostly from Zimbabwe.
Nzimande says there are still too many infringements on the roads.
He says: “For instance we have given 30 people fines since we started this morning (Thursday) at R22 500 and we have undocumented passengers arrested because they don’t have their documents.”
