Prof Khumalo succumbs to COVID-19 related complications

A former senior member of the SABC Board, Professor Bongani Khumalo has succumbed to COVID-19 related complications. He was 68-years-old.

Professor Khumalo was a member of the SABC board from 2013 to 2015. He resigned following the resignation of former chairperson Ellen Tshabalala over the controversy regarding her qualifications.

In 2016 Professor Khumalo was the first witness in Parliament’s investigation into various allegations at the public broadcaster. He was also head of the Lottery Commission for seven years.

Professor Khumalo’s son Mzi says he was showing signs of recovery but then suddenly died in hospital in Johannesburg this morning.

Yesterday South Africa recorded 9 580 new coronavirus cases, taking the total number of cases to date to 1 021 451.

The country has also recorded 497 new COVID-19 related fatalities.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Dr. Zweli Mkhize has given the assurance that government’s plan to roll out a coronavirus vaccine by April next year is on track.

However, Mkhize says South Africa is considering 11 vaccines that are currently being tested in various countries.

Several countries have already received shipments of the Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, and AstraZeneca jabs.

He says government is looking for specific elements in the vaccines.
