The Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) has confirmed that Minister Pravin Gordhan will resign from active politics when the term of the current administration ends after elections in May.

Gordhan has been at the helm of the DPE since 2018.

In a statement, the department says: “The announcement that the minister intends to retire from active politics following the upcoming elections is emblematic of the minister’s desire to be candid so that all critical constituencies that relate to his current portfolio are sufficiently informed of his plans.”

Gordhan was appointed commissioner of the South African Revenue Service (SARS) in 1999; shortly after serving as deputy in 1998.

He has also previously served as the Minister of Finance, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and Public Enterprises.
