A Portuguese fugitive wanted by the government of his country is expected to appear at the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Joao de Oliveira has been arrested in Umhlanga north of Durban by Interpol’s National Crime Bureau.

De Oliveira absconded from Portugal after having been convicted in a multi-million dollar fraud case.

He was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment but escaped before serving his sentence.

“A convicted fraudster wanted by the Portuguese government was arrested in Umhlanga Rocks, north of Durban this morning. On 24th November the head of the Judicial Police of Portugal brought this matter to the attention of National Police Commissioner of the SAPS General Sitole during a bilateral meeting at the 89th Interpol General Assembly in Istanbul Turkey. Members from the Interpol NCB in Pretoria traced the fugitive to a location in Umhlanga Rocks where he was arrested at 07:00 this morning. The fugitive will appear for the first time in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday as part of his extradition process,” says police spokesperson Vish Naidoo.
