Political parties must submit nomination requirements by March 8: IEC

Reading Time: 2 minutes

All independent candidates and political parties intending to contest the national and provincial polls must submit their nomination requirements by March 8.

These include the list of candidates, required signatures for independents and unregistered parties together with the prescribed deposits.

According to the elections timetable, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) will verify the documents and issue notices of non-compliance where warranted by March 18.

Parties will be allowed to remove or substitute a candidate nominated by more than one party by March 25.

IEC Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo says the commission will publish provisional lists of candidates for inspection by citizens on  March  26 and 27, 2024.

He says, “It is a matter of immense national importance for the citizens to know who the nominated candidates are. The publication of the provisional lists of candidates goes to the heart of the vote based on informed choices. Therefore, the provisional lists of candidates will be published for inspection on 26 and 27 March.”

“Interested parties may object against certain prospective candidates who are nominated. Such objections must be lodged with the Commission on 27 March 2024. The Commission will decide on these objections on 28 March 2024.”

Mamabolo says anyone not satisfied with the decision of the commission may approach the Electoral Court to appeal the objection decision by April 2, with the court determining these appeals on the 9th of the same month.

He says the conclusion of the candidate nomination process begins the ballot paper printing process.
