A huge search has been mounted for three children who were in a car that was hijacked at Madadeni outside Newcastle in northern KwaZulu-Natal.

The children are between 6 and 11-years old. They were on their way to school when the car was hijacked.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Thembeka Mbhele says the hijackers trapped the driver to stop by indicating that the car had a flat tyre.

Mbhele says “there were six kids in the car three males and three females and when he got out of the car to check what was going on, these suspects approached him threatening him with a knife and then they pulled him out of the vehicle.”

Mbhele said that three kids managed to escape but the suspects fled the scene using the complainants BMW, which is silver in colour.

“The police are still searching for the suspects as well as the children. There is a case of carjacking that is being investigated,” said Mbhele.
