More than 7 000 people have been arrested for speeding and 102 for driving under the influence in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro since the beginning of the festive season.
The Mayoral Committee member for Safety and Security, Lawrence Troon has warned motorists that the metro’s law enforcement agencies are on high alert to ensure that the rules of the road are being adhered to.
He also reminded residents and holidaymakers that the midnight curfew is still in place and will be enforced.
The city also did not grant permission for the discharge of fireworks on New Year’s Eve.
