NPA welcomes court decision to deny De Rendeiro bail

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has welcomed the decision by the Verulam Magistrate’s Court to deny 69-year-old Joao Manuel de Oliveira Rendeiro bail.

His appearance in court relates to his recent arrest in Umhlanga, on an Interpol Red Notice.

In September, De Oliviera Rendeiro was convicted of tax evasion and money laundering amounting to 31 million euros in Portugal and was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment.

He took the matter on appeal and when Portuguese authorities realised that he had absconded, they issued the Red Notice.

National Prosecuting Authority KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson, Natasha Ramkisson-Kara says, “Mr Rendeiro was denied bail in the Durban Magistrate’s Court. His appearance relates to his recent arrest in Umhlanga, on an Interpol Red Notice. In denying Rendeiro bail, the Regional Court magistrate said he is [a] flight risk. Releasing him on bail will undermine the proper functioning of the criminal justice system, in particular the bail system.”
