A large media contingent, including several foreign journalists, are gathered outside the Verulam Magistrates Court north of Durban, ahead of the first appearance of  a Portuguese fugitive who was sentenced to jail in his country.

He was arrested in Umhlanga, north of Durban, by the Interpol’s National Crime Bureau over the weekend.

Joao de Oliveira had absconded from Portugal after having been convicted for multi-million dollar fraud.

Oliveira was serving a 12-years prison sentence when he escaped.

Police Spokesperson, Vish Naidoo, said on the 24th of November, the head of the Judicial Police of Portugal brought this matter to the attention of the National Commissioner, Khehla Sitole, during a bilateral meeting at the Interpol General Assembly in Istanbul Turkey.

Naidoo says members from the Interpol NCB in Pretoria traced the fugitive to a location in Umhlanga Rocks where he was arrested.
