Reading Time: 2 minutes

A new witness is to be called in the Sindiso Magaqa murder trial in the High Court in Pietermaritzburg, on Thursday.

The former African National Congress (ANC) Youth League Secretary-General and two female councillors, Jabulile Msiya and Nontsikelelo Mafa were shot and severely wounded in the Ibisi area of uMzimkhulu in southern KwaZulu-Natal in 2017.

At the time Msiya and Magaqa both served on the executive committee of the municipality.

Magaqa’s murder is seen as one of the high-profile cases of alleged political violence in the province in recent years.

The state has lined up over 50 witnesses. The first key witness is Jabulile Msiya.

Sindiso Magaqa feared for his life, witness tells court:

Earlier this week she told the court that after the attack on Magaqa, she feared for her life.

Msiya maintained Magaqa’s attack was related to the uMzimkhulu Memorial Hall renovations, which they suspected involved fraud and corruption.

Msiya told the court that the actual work that was done on the hall did not match the money spent on the project.

Sbonelo Myeza, Mbulelo Mpofana, Mlungisi Ncalane and Sibusiso Ncengwa have pleaded not guilty on charges of murder, attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and the illegal possession of firearms.
