The National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) has criticised President Cyril Ramaphosa for signing off a 3% wage increase for all public office bearers.
The below-inflation wage increase follows recommendations from the Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers for a 3.8% increase.
This means cabinet ministers, judges, traditional leaders and Members of Parliament will receive increases for the 2022-2023 financial year.
“Because they are the ones that have brought the crisis that SA is confronted with. So, by rewarding them with 3%, what are we saying? Imagine how much a minister, deputy minister, deputy president or a judge earns in this country and we are giving them 3%, amid the challenges that ordinary South Africans and workers have due to the cost of living in this country,” adds Nkolonzi.
