Nearly a third of SA’s water is lost to alien invasive plants: CapeNature

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Western Cape biodiversity unit, CapeNature, says the clearing of alien vegetation in the province could increase the flow of water into local rivers and dams by more than 30%.

It says nearly a third of the country’s water is lost due to alien invasive plant species in critical water catchment areas.

The unit has spent around R40 million on clearing invasive foreign plants and trees over the past four years.

Executive Director of Conservation, Ernst Baard, says more work needs to be done to resolve the problem.
