N West mineworkers head home for festive season

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Mineworkers in Marikana near Rustenburg in the North West have begun their trip home for the festive season.

Many come from neighbouring Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries including Mozambique, Lesotho and Botswana.

Taxi associations transporting the miners say they are ready to work and transport the workers to their families.

Taxis and buses are fully packed with luggage, including groceries and children’s toys.

The festive period is an escape from their dangerous underground work, with some only going home once or twice a year.

For these taxi drivers road safety is a priority.

Most of the miners will return to work in the first week of January. But for now all roads lead to one place that brings joy to them.
