Metrorail’s central line train service in Cape Town remains suspended due to acts of vandalism, and it’s unclear when operations will resume.

Three suspects were arrested in separate incidents for the theft of copper cables at the weekend.

Spokesperson Riana Scott says the arrests took place in Khayelitsha and Paarden Island.

She says the central line has been suspended for a few weeks now.

“We are beginning to see more and more people from the community giving us tip-offs. We welcome that, and we want to encourage them to continue doing that. I think the ordinary people are tired of criminals scuppering their train service – and they’re beginning to come forward. We have seen in the last week, very encouraging signs and tip-offs and we want to thank people.”
