Tom Moyane is being questioned by Parliament's Standing Committee on Finance about why Jonas Makwakwa was re-instated last month after being on suspension for a year.

Sars Commissioner Tom Moyane says he reinstated Chief Officer of Business and Individual Tax, Jonas Makwakwa, after an internal investigation exonerated him of misconduct.

Moyane has conceded, however, that there is a pending investigation by the Hawks against Makwakwa.

Moyane is being questioned by Parliament’s Standing Committee on Finance about why Makwakwa was re-instated in November after being on suspension for a year.

He’s added that another Sars official who was investigated, Kelly-Ann Elksie, had no case to answer.

“The coming back of Mr Makwakwa was informed and advised by a duly fair and transparent investigation that took place in the organisation. As regard Ms Elksie, there was no DC process in regards to the matter because those issues, as per the report that came from the chair who was running the process, there was not a case to respond because the money came from her mother,” says Moyane.
