Reading Time: < 1 minute

Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) has urged relatives of the people killed in the train crash in the Free State to contact its walk-in centre in Braamfontein in Johannesburg for identification.

Nineteen people were killed when the long-distance Shosholoza Meyl train and a truck  collided at a level crossing in Kroonstad and Hennenman on Thursday.

Prasa has so far managed to locate family members of sixteen of the 19 deceased.

The agency’s Sipho Sithole says if relatives cannot visit the walk-in centre, they should call its toll free number 011 313 0067.

“Tomorrow (Monday) the families will be coming in at our walk-in centre because the process now is to do the identification process. Once we get the green light to proceed with the identification back in Kroonstad with the families, we will then be doing that, because the identification of remains is dealt with by the health services, by pathologists and Saps.”
