KZN residents urged to use water sparingly

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Water levels in some of the dams in KwaZulu-Natal remain critically low.

Residents are being urged to continue using water sparingly as water levels at the Albert Falls Dam, the largest dam in the Umgeni catchment, stands at just 20%.

Umgeni Water Spokesperson Shami Harichunder says recently, the Midmar Dam received 17 of rainfall and Albert Falls just 15 millimeters.

But Harichunder says the south and north coast dams, including Hazelmere Dam, are still maintaining good levels.

“What this means is that collectively the amount of water available at Midmar, Albert falls, Needle and Inanda is not sufficient to meet the full needs of Ethekwini, Mgungundlovu and Umsunduzi local municipality. That is why the water restrictions of 15% still remain in place in much of Durban, about 80% of eThekwini, all of Pietermaritzburg and all of uMngungundlovu. All we are saying is that consumers need to remember that water restrictions are still there, and they need to please adhere to it.”
