Several people have been injured and property damaged after a severe storm accompanied by heavy rain, hail and strong winds wreaked havoc in the south of Johannesburg and on the West Rand.
The most affected areas include Roodepoort and Lenasia, south of Johannesburg, where the roof of a Fruit and vegetable store has collapsed.
A ward councillor in Roodepoort, Caleb Fin says they have been assessing damages since Saturday afternoon.
“The storm has caused severe damages to several roads in terms of several trees falling down. Also electrical cables that have snapped in places. So we have multiple power outages as well as main roads blocked,” says Fin
Fin also cautioned motorists to drive carefully.
“So we caution motorists to please drive carefully and to look out for blocks in the road where jmpd etc are diverting the traffic. Please just cooperate and assist us in that regard.” He says.
He says he’s received reports of damaged shacks from the Rugby Club informal settlement. The shacks were affected by strong wind sand heavy hail.
