The City of Johannesburg says it will cost an estimated R178-million to repair the damage caused by the underground methane gas explosion along Lilian Ngoyi Street in the city centre.

The explosion which ripped apart the stretch of the road left one person dead and 48 others injured.

Joburg City Manager Floyd Brink has briefed the media.

“Our rough estimate at this point currently sits at around R178 million and that is based on work that has been done. But its preliminary work, preliminary designs and we will indicate to you as we are moving closer with detailed designs. That particular amount might then increase based on the designs we will have. So, that is only preliminary to look at what it will cost us for the road, what it’ll cost for any other infrastructure damages and also to reconstruct that particular tunnel.”
