IEC in De Aar pleads with loan sharks to return IDs to borrowers to allow them to vote

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in the Emthanjeni Municipality in De Aar, Northern Cape, is pleading with loan sharks to hand over identity documents to allow people to vote.
The loan sharks keep IDs of money-borrowers as collateral. They also have to give their SASSA and bank cards as surety that they will pay back the money.  Many unemployed people in the area depend on borrowing money from shop owners.
IEC official Themba Loko has urged other stakeholders to put an end to this illegal activity.

“We are making this call to the Mashinisa’s and any people who are in illegal possession, we are encouraging them to hand them over to the citizens so that they can come and cast their votes because without their ID’s they cannot come cast their votes. And then secondly, we are calling upon all the other stakeholders who can assist the IEC in ensuring that these illegal activities are stopped and prevented.”
