GBV inspired me to pursue my PhD: Muvhango actress

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Muvhango actress Regina “Vho-Masindi” Nesengani says the issue of gender-based violence inspired her to pursue her PhD.

Nesengani, a 65-year-old granny of 12, received her PhD from the University of South Africa on Tuesday.

Her thesis, written in TshiVenda, is about women abuse, as seen through dialogue in drama books written by male writers.

Nesengani says, “The issue of gender-based violence triggered my heart, way back in the 70s when I was still young. I could hear women gossiping about the behaviour they got from their families.”

She says she never imagined she would ever achieve a PhD in her life.

“It’s just the grace of God, the grace of God kept me from wat back until today, so there is nothing I can say and nothing to say that I did it on my own. No, it’s the grace of God that pushed me up to this far.”
