Free education the only way SA can guarantee freedom: Zuma

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Former President Jacob Zuma says free education is the only way South Africans can guarantee absolute freedom.

In December 2017, Zuma announced free education for tertiary students struggling financially.

The former President was speaking at Bizimali High School in Nkandla.

This was Zuma’s first public appearance since his resignation two weeks ago. Zuma says announcing free education had been something he wanted to do.

He says no child should be deprived of education because of their financial background. Free education was one of the last major announcements Zuma made towards the end of his tenure.

He says free education is a true reflection of democracy. Zuma says for free education to achieve its intended purpose it needs to be strictly monitored.

Bizimali High School is situated in the most rural parts of Nkandla and it managed to achieve exceptional Matric results with 88% pass and was the best performing school in the King Cetshwayo District.

Its top achiever, 18 year-old Sphile Ntuli received 100% in physical science. He’s doing his first year in actuarial sciences.

“I am quite honoured to have achieved such results. Even though we studied under inefficient conditions of having no water and electricity, I am glad we triumphed over those circumstances.”

Zuma has committed to sponsor computers to Grade 11 and 12 classes at the school.
