‘Electoral process to unfold following publishing of timetable’

The IEC's timetable has been published
Reading Time: < 1 minute

Former Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) Commissioner, Terry Tselane, says nothing will stop the electoral process from unfolding as the election timetable has already been published.

This as the newly formed Labour party, wants the deadline for candidate nominations by political parties and independent candidates extended, which is at five o’clock today.

Tselane says some sort of litigation was always expected.

“There was always going to be someone taking the matter to court because as you know many individuals and political parties were disgruntled about the new Electoral Amendment Act.  There is an admission from the side of the minister that it has not gone far enough in terms of dealing with the expectations of people, and what some of the provisions may be.”

“But of course it is within the right of any political party to take the issues to legal instruments or legal platforms such as the Electoral Court if they are not happy with certain things that are happening in preparations for the elections,” adds Tselane.
