DA snatches outright majority following George by-election

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has won two of the three wards from yesterdays by election in George in the Western Cape, giving them outright majority to govern the municipality.

They were previously in a coalition with the Freedom Front Plus (FF+).

The DA took wards 16 and 27, while the Patriotic Alliance claimed ward 20.

The by-elections were called after the resignation of three GOOD councillors – two of whom joined the DA, and one who rejoined GOOD.

Earlier this week, the GOOD Party tried to postpone the poll, claiming voter fraud by the DA, an allegation that the DA has since refuted. However, the Electoral Court dismissed their application.

GOOD secretary General, Brett Herron, says they will consult with their lawyers on the way forward.
