The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Limpopo Legislature has expressed concern about the irregular expenditure incurred by the provincial Education Department.

Audit reports indicate that the department has incurred almost two billion rand in irregular expenditure in the past three financial years. The department is yet to comment.

DA spokesperson on education, Jacques Smalle, says the department is battling to address the problems such as non-compliance in supply chain management.

“The department has consistently had high levels of irregular expenditure and accumulated 329 million rand of irregular expenditure in the current financial year, 694 million and further 957 million rand in the previous two financial years. The Democratic Alliance has written to the chairperson of the Portfolio Committee of Education to request the department to send a report to the committee with the department’s [plan to] address these audit findings as well as to address consequence management.”

In February, the Democratic Alliance (DA) said the Gauteng Department of Education incurred over R1 billion in irregular expenditure for the 2019/2020 financial year.

The party said that according to the Auditor-General, effective steps have not been taken to stop non-compliance in procurement and contract management.

However, the department said that it only incurred irregular expenditure of R14-million in that financial year.
