‘Corruption continues to deprive poor of fundamental human rights’

Reading Time: 2 minutes

African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) leader the Reverend Kenneth Meshoe says corruption is depriving the poor of fundamental human rights.

Meshoe says despite rights being enshrined in the constitution, many cannot access them.

He was speaking at Constitution Hill in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, at the party’s commemoration of Freedom Day on Thursday.

The day marked 29 years since the country’s first democratic elections.

Freedom Day I ACDP marches to Constitution Hill:

Meshoe says government should not fail to uphold South Africans’ fundamental rights.

“The right to access to sufficient food and water is guaranteed in Chapter 2 of the Constitution. But unfortunately, in spite of what we have in the Constitution, too many South Africans are going to bed hungry. South Africa is a wealthy country and nobody in South Africa needs to go to bed hungry. It is happening because we have criminals around us who steal food from the poor, who steal money that should be helping the poor, who steal the pension money, shame on this government.”

Meshoe also lambasted the African National Congress (ANC) for what he says is the deterioration of the quality of life under its leadership.

Meshoe says South Africans have been stripped of their right to access electricity and clean water.
