Comrades leader reaches halfway mark

Richard Mavuso has become the first athlete participating in the 2018 Comrades Marathon to reach the halfway mark at Drummond. He was followed by Mike Fokoroni and Marko Mambo.

Mavuso reached Drummond at 02:41:32. When you reach Drummond you have travelled 44.267 km and are left with 45.917 to the finish line.

More than 21 000 athletes are participating in the marathon. The distance for this year’s down run race is 90.2 km.

The race started outside the Pietermaritzburg City Hall and will end at the Moses Mabhida Stadium for the first time.

Previous races ended at the Kingsmead Cricket Stadium on the down run.

This year’s Down Run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban on Sunday, 10 June 2018 will have six official cut-offs along the 90.184km route.

The first cut-off will be implemented at Lion Park with subsequent cut-offs positioned at Cato Ridge, the halfway mark in Drummond, Winston Park, Pinetown and with the final one at Sherwood.

This years theme is “Asijiki, no turning back”.
