Tensions have run high between public order police and disgruntled community members of KwaNyuswa in the west of Durban. The community claim they have been without water for years. Others say they experience power outages for months.

Community services like healthcare and schooling has been severely affected as protestors blocked main roads. Police have retaliated with rubber bullets to disperse them. Police have also taken one person into custody. These residents say they have a letter that authorises them to hold the protest.

One of the community members says, “They are shooting us, they are shooting us, yet we have letter to protest. We want the captain from Hilcrest, he must come here because we have a letter that gives us authority to protest. We don’t care about rubber bullets.”
