Child maintenance defaulters on Justice Department crosshairs

The Justice Department has sent a stern warning to those who neglect to pay child maintenance and are abdicating their responsibilities.

The department says it will track them down to ensure that they do not continue to abdicate and will soon implement new systems using various online databases and “information hubs” to trace parents who refuse to pay child maintenance.

Justice Department’s senior administrative officer Josephine Peta says the new system will help the courts finalise more cases and assess the finances of errant parents.

Peta says, “We’ve also introduced a key performance indicator. We’ll be able to finalise every maintenance case within 90 days from the date of the beginning of the process. That’s why we say we are phasing in all these improvements on an ongoing basis.”

The department plans to use cell numbers registered with network service providers, credit bureau information, vehicle registrations, and other paper trails to find maintenance defaulters.
