Blitzboks secure third place in Hong Kong

The Blitzboks produced a convincing performance in their last match in the Hong Kong leg of the HSBC Rugby Sevens World Series against New Zealand for a third place finish.

It was consolation following their heart breaking two-point loss to Fiji in the semi-finals.

The overall performance of the young Blitzboks deserved praise for an impressive display.

With a number of new faces in the team, it showed that there is depth in South African sevens rugby.

Blitzboks coach Marius Schoeman says, “We are very proud of the boys, such a humbling experience and an opportunity for these players to play at such a great stage.”

The South African Sevens booked their semi-final spot against FIji after a comfortable win against Spain on Saturday.

Fiji erased a 12 point deficit to defeat the Blitzbokke 26-24.

Selvyn Davids scored a hat-trick as South Africa took a 19-5 break.

However, Fiji made a dramatic comeback.

At the start of the second half, Samisoni Viriviri and Amenoni Nasilasila made a mockery of the South African defence to score three tries for a 26-19 lead.

With some time on the clock Muller du Plessis scored a try, however, Davids failed to convert, handing victory to Fiji.

The Blitzboks beat New Zealand 29-7 in the third and fourth play-off match.

Stedman Gans scored a brace to give the Blitzboks a 12-nil lead.

South Africa was successful with an attack that was launched deep as Dewald Human finished off the team effort.

Tone Siu crossed over for New Zealand, but those were their only points.

Zain Davids scored another South African try as a he humiliated the New Zealand defence.

Muller du Plessis wrapped up the game.

A ball kicked by Selvyn Davids behind the defence found Du Plessis, who sped off to score.
