The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) has expressed its concern over the budget cut for the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).

The League says it has learned that numerous students are not guaranteed a chance to study this year because of their difficult circumstances.

The president of the league, Collen Malatji, says that the Minister of Higher Education, Blade Nzimande, needs to intervene as a matter of urgency.

Malatji claims, “If he does not act on it we have resolved that maybe we must get a new broom to sweep. But so far we have given him this part to resolve, not to agree to the cutting of the budget on NSFAS instead it must be increased.”

“And we have said that failure to implement those things we will be the first to come up and say that he must go and if there’s no movement the President must act urgently on such and make sure that there’s a new broom to sweep,”  Malatji adds.
