ANC in KZN believes rogue members cost party key municipalities

The African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal plans to take disciplinary action against party members who worked with the opposition to topple the party from running several municipalities.

The party says this follows voice notes making rounds on social media, members either plotting to diminish the ANC’s prospects or colluding with the opposition.

Some party councillors in Newcastle, uMzumbe in the south coast as well as in uKhahlamba in the midlands are alleged to have voted with the opposition.

ANC in KZN believes rogue members cost the party key municipalities:

During the recent polls, the party lost at least 15 hung municipalities to the Inkatha Freedom Party. These include the second biggest cities in KwaZulu-Natal such as uMhlathuze in the Richards Bay area, Newcastle, King Cetshwayo District, Alfred Duma, and uThukela District.

The party says the hatred among some members is also said to have contributed to relegating the ANC to the opposition benches in some councils.

Disciplinary action

The ANC leadership in the province says it will institute disciplinary action against members who might have worked with the opposition to unseat the ANC during the elections.

“The PEC is going to meet over three days this coming Monday part of what it will be doing is to, conduct a detailed assessment of our performance but equally to identify some of the rogue elements within the ANC who have worked with the opposition to ensure the ANC does not win in certain areas. We will have to identify those elements and they will effectively have to be taken to disciplinary action. There is nobody who is a genuine member of the ANC who will work for the demise of the ANC,” Ntuli explains.

Ntuli says the provincial leadership will also probe if the arrest of former President Jacob Zuma, the Shembe church leadership battle and the AmaZulu kingship succession played a role in the party’s support decline.

The ANC in the province plans to convene three regional conferences in General Gizenga Mpanza in KwaDukuza, Moses Mabhida in Pietermaritzburg and Josiah Gumede in Ladysmith before the end of the year.
