ANC calls on AU to intervene in Sudan conflict

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The ANC has called on the African Union to intervene in the fighting in Sudan.

This as clashes intensify between the military and the paramilitary group in the capital, Khartoum.

The Sudan Armed Forces and Rapid Support Forces have failed to broker a power-sharing agreement to revive Sudan’s transition to democracy after a military coup in 2021. Over 400 people have died in the conflict-ridden country.

Several countries have evacuated their citizens amid a 72 hour ceasefire after 10 days of intense fighting.

ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has called for a permanent ceasefire in the country. He was speaking at the party’s headquarters in Johannesburg.

“We noted with great concern the eruption of conflict in the Sudan and call for the immediate ceasefire between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan. Urgent steps must be taken by the African Union to encourage the Sudan peace process and encourage the establishment of a transitional government that must work seriously to establish institutions of democratic civilian rule.”
