The High Court in Durban has sentenced a 57-year-old fraudster to ten years in prison. Sharitha Hariram was convicted of fraud and theft in September 2020.

After the sentence, the court granted her leave to appeal. However, the appeals court dismissed Hariram’s application and upheld her original sentence.

Hariram was granted special authority to represent racehorse owners who were not registered for VAT. However, between the VAT periods of October 2011 to August 2012, she made fraudulent claims of over R2 million from SARS for the racehorse owners’ VAT.
