Momentum health insurance has announced a partnership with the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu)  to provide affordable health insurance cover.

National Health Insurance (NHI) has been in the pipeline for several years now. But, there are still some mixed feelings about the NHI bill.

The question of funding remains a major concern. Now Momentum Health is gearing up to offer affordable health insurance while the wait continues.

Chief Executive Officer Hannes Viljoen says the company has partnered with labour union Nehawu investments and other black leaders in the healthcare sector, to bring cheaper and affordable health insurance to all South Africans.

“We’re doing this because we know that if we bring incredible partners who can help us and are aligned to our purpose and our values together with what we currently have as a capable set of solutions and capabilities combining those two can really do magic in our industry and we’re looking forward in achieving our national pursuit of more health for more people for less and universal access to care,” says Viljoen.

The partnership is in line with NHI:

The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru), Nehawu, and other black leaders in the healthcare sector take up to 32% shares, while Momentum retains 68% of the remaining stake in the business.

Chief Executive Officer of Nehawu Investment, Makgane Thobejane, says by joining forces with Momentum, solutions it seeks to see healthcare services reach every South African citizen.

“We all have to ensure that health is not discriminating on the basis of class, gender, class, race, gender, or any other provision because it is your constitutional right,” says Thobejane.

Momentum Chief Executive Officer of Public Sector Health at Momentum Dr Ali Hamdulay says this partnership supports the NHI bill and is no way competing with it.

“We don’t see this is in competition with NHI, we see it as a supportive mechanism to NHI, I mean we’re bringing in new thoughts into the dialogue relating to NHI, adding to the opportunity to create a solution for our country and our people.”

Momentum says the pricing structure will remain the same for its current customers. It says it is also investing in digitisation.
