How to ease back into fitness

Reading Time: 2 minutes

It’s almost five months since South Africa went into lockdown and there are people who have been faithful with keeping fit – posting on social media almost daily in efforts to challenge themselves and others.

However, there are some who stopped exercising altogether and now want to ease back into an exercise routine.

SABC News spoke to Personal Trainer Phemello Mpete who says if you start exercising again – start slow.

“Start from the bottom. It doesn’t matter whether you are within fitness or starting afresh you need to start from the bottom. I understand that it’s a difficult time for everyone but we need to work out. I think it can start with a minor activity if it means walking around your house do that just start somewhere. If it means taking a workout from your trainer online take that and use it. Exercise plays a vital role.”

Phemello also adds that it is important to keep fit and especially during the national lockdown because it helps with keeping your mind focused.

“Having something to look forward to like exercising might be a boost. So we need exercise to keep our minds in check, to be physically fit.”

Keeping fit is said to be important for a stronger and healthier immune system, which is good to fight off COVID-19 and flu or cold symptoms.
