KwaZulu-Natal youth are celebrating the end of Youth Month with a rich, African cultural event in Pietermaritzburg.
The Indoni My Heritage My Pride Programme is hosting the event.
The moral regeneration programme targets the youth by using identity focused programmes to address social ills.
Hundreds of young people dressed in traditional African clothes have gathered at the Cedara College Auditorium to celebrate their culture and heritage.
The Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa says South Africa should use the Indoni programme to rescue its youth from social ills.
Mthethwa is the keynote speaker at an event to commemorate the end of Youth Month in Pietermaritzburg.
The event has brought together young people from across the country to celebrate their African culture and heritage.
Mthethwa says the programme has been remarkable in guiding the youth to appreciate their African roots.
“If we are to deal with the challenges and social ills that we are facing as a nation – this is the way to go. Here, kids are taught a very important culture, our culture. Our culture as South Africans, is a culture of Ubuntu, understanding others, respect for others, whilst you are proud of who you are you. We are able to share with the world and the world is waiting for us, to show them who we are, what we mean when we say we are united in our diversity.”

Indoni founder Dr Nomcebo Mthembu says young people should be proud of their African roots.
“It’s about the youth of 2019, the youth of now saying, we are proud of who we are, we are proud of our heritage. Taking from that, the youth of 1976, they were fighting for liberation. The youth of now are saying, how can we take that forward. How can we use our heritage as being our pride and take from the youth of 1976 and fight further. We as the African young people, we led without any stigma and we lead in a socially cohesive way.”
