French Open qualifying tournament kicks off

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The qualifying tournament for the French Open tennis tournament begins on Monday, with South African Lloyd Harris amongst those hoping to advance to the main draw.

The top players have the week off ahead of the start of Roland Garros.

Rafael Nadal continues to be the favourite, after his win at the Italian Open in Rome on Sunday took him back to the top of the World rankings.

Nadal was up against 2nd seed Alexander Zverev in the final of the clay courts in Rome. He won the first set and looked set to cruise.

But Zverev fought back and took the second set 6-1. He was looking impressive after his win in Madrid a week ago, and had hopes of a first win in five meetings against Nadal.

He was 3-1 up in the deciding set when the rain came down, and appeared to ruin his momentum. The experienced Nadal came back re-energised, and won four games on the trot to take the set 6-3.

“It has been an amazing week. So important for me – this week – after last week in Madrid. It was tough losing the quarter-final, so to have this trophy with me again is unforgettable. It was an emotional final, a tough one, said Nadal”

Nadal and Zverev will be the top two seeds in the French Open, as Roger Federer is not competing again this year.
