Landfill sites opened to eThekwini residents amid strike

The eThekwini Municipality has opened its landfill sites to members of the public who need throw away their garbage.

This is due to waste collection services being disrupted due to the ongoing eThekwini Municipal workers ‘ strike.

eThekwini municipality spokesperson Gugu Sisilana, “Residents are allowed to bring a bakkie load of waste until normal collection resumes. These landfill facilities are also open to businesses. The following landfill sites are available for residents to use, Mariannhill Landfill Site, Bisasar Road Landfill Site, Buffelsdraai Landfill Site, Illovu Landfill Site. Operational hours are Monday to Friday from 07:00 to half past 4 in the afternoon. On Saturday and Sunday, they are again open from 07:00 in the morning until half past 3 in the afternoon.”

The strike is also affecting healthcare services in the province.

On Thursday, it was reported that doctors and nurses at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital battled without electricity for 3 days following a burst transformer.

It’s alleged that repairs at the substation were stalled because of the ongoing strike.

Workers affiliated with SAMWU are demanding that their salaries be adjusted to mirror those of employees in other metros.

Several, patients were sent home as some units at the hospital were not functioning. The municipality issued a statement saying clinics at Hambanathi, north of Durban and Craigieburn on the south coast have been temporarily closed because of the strike.
