Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has welcomed the arrest of a suspect in the murder probe of a 12-year-old girl, Firdous Kleinsmidt, from Mitchells Plain.

The grade seven learner was caught in crossfire between gangs while waiting at her for transport.

A 27-year-old male suspect is expected to appear in the Mitchells Plain Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.

Hill-Lewis explains, “We must take some encouragement that the police have arrested one person who’s allegedly involved in this terrible tragedy and we really hope that the police act swiftly to arrest all those who are answerable. These gangsters that treat our community with impunity and treat the lives of children with impunity, if the city can do anything to speed up the investigation and help arrest these people, then we stand ready to do whatever we can.”
