According to the Western Cape provincial government, there were 46 deaths in Cape Town this past weekend despite heavy police presence and the deployment of soldiers in the crime-ridden areas.
The deaths were a result of 21 shootings, 20 stabbings and five from other undisclosed causes.
MEC for Community Safety in the Western Cape Albert Fritz says there is often a rise in the number of killings towards the end of the month and around pay day.
Only 10 of the murders out of the 46 are believed to be gang related, with the rest involving alcohol, he adds.
