Western Cape ANC to oppose drought levy

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The African National Council opposition in the City of Cape Town Council intends to lobby Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba to decline the approval of a temporary drought levy.

The Democratic Alliance-led council adopted a motion in this regard on Tuesday, but it still has to go through a public participatory process.

Mayor Patricia de Lille says the city wants to raise a billion rand over the next few years through the levy as the water crisis continues.

“This decision is subjected to the consent from the Minister. We are going to lobby the Minister saying no, as much as we are mindful of the crisis that we are faced with, we can’t continue to punish the working class. Remember, people who are owning properties of R400 000 are the working class. In fact, the working class is now subsiding the wealthy people. So, it can’t be right,” says ANC Chief Whip in the couincil, Xolani Sotashe.
