The United Nations children’s fund Unicef says there is a need to improve the safety of children in and outside their homes.

As Child Protection Week draws to an end, Unicef’s Chief Social Policy analyst Mykah Huijbregts says it’s critical for authorities to ensure that vulnerable children are protected from hazardous and harmful environments.

“Children’s wellbeing is still problematic and their rights to protection are at risk.  There is a need to ensure that every child is safe and live in save and protected environments at home and schools in order for them to be resilient youth and become the human capital of the future for nations to grow the economy.”

Meanwhile President Cyril Ramaphosa reacted with shock to the deaths of five children in a fire in the Masiya informal settlement in Philippi in Cape Town. He says the tragedy brings home the dangers that thousands of vulnerable South Africans are facing, especially during winter.
