SuperSport return to Cape Town City to defend MT8 title

Reading Time: 2 minutes

SuperSport United return to their happy hunting ground as they take aim at the ambitious Cape Town City in defence of their title, the MTN8, at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

If SuperSport win, they will be the first team to win the cup twice in concession. The match starts at 7pm on Saturday.

Moses Mabhida has proven to be a happy hunting ground for SuperSport United. A ten men SuperSport team beat Cape Town City on penalties, in the final of the MTN8 last year in Durban.

The win came three months after Matsatsantsa beat Orlando Pirates 4-1 in the final of the Nedbank Cup also in Durban. It was deja vu, just a month ago when the Nedbank champions, beat Bucs in the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup 4-3 at the same venue.

SuperSport assistant coach Godfrey Mosoetsa says the cup means a lot for Coach Kaitano Tembo. “The winner takes all so it’s very important from a head coach perspective, it’s very important for him personally. I’ve known him as a player then he came to the club while I was still at the academy and we have worked well and it’s something I would like to see him do well in it.”

SuperSport’s success at the Moses Mabhida Stadium does not end there. Last year they also knocked out Kaizer Chiefs in the MTN8. Their dominance is even felt in the ABSA Premiership. After six matches they have won four and lost two.

Their good run makes them firm favourites over Cape Town City. However, Cape Town City assistant coach Vasili Manousakis says confidence levels are high at the camp.

“I think we came off a decent result against Pirates in the league you know and that pretty much set the tone and the boys showed character and some good desire to come back and ever since then we gave them couple days off. They’ve been back to training and we have pushed them really hard and we have tested them physically, mentally, tactically and they responded well and what makes the mood even better is that the head coach is back.”

City are eleventh on the log after only one win, three draws and two losses.
